Dermal fillers are soft injectable gels containing Hyaluronic Acid-a substance which is naturally occurring in the skin. Over time this substance can diminish in the skin and can lead to the development of unwanted lines or wrinkles, most often in the lower part of the face i.e 'smokers lines', naso-labial folds. By injecting Dermal Fillers in to these lines or wrinkles, volume is added to the skin and fills the unwanted lines creating a smoother, youthful appearance. Dermal fillers can also be used to add volume and definition to the lips and treat any unevenness or lack of symmetry. Different grades of filler are used on different areas of the face which would be discussed during consultation. A local anaesthetic is used during this treatment to help avoid unnecessary discomfort, then the filler is injected in to the desired area using very fine needles. Results are normally instant and further improve over the next couple of weeks. Side-effects may include tenderness and swelling around the injection site and some slight bruising may occur, these tend to resolve between 1-3 days.Other very rare side-effects such as allergy and infection would be discussed during consultation. The amount of time fillers can last varies between person to person and also depends on the area treated, generally however, they can last for 6-9 months.
